The choice was rather simple back in the late 70's and early 80's when computers were just starting to come into the mainstream, if you wanted to learn about them you bought an IBM clone unless you were among the rich and famous. I believe that is how come Mac's came to be associated with the artsy-fartsy crowd. It's also why IBM quickly grabbed the market share and why there is much more less expensive software available for them. Follow the money...
