The choice was rather simple back in the late 70's and
early 80's when
computers were just starting to come into the
mainstream, if you wanted
to learn about them you bought an IBM clone unless you
were among the
rich and famous. I believe that is how come Mac's
came to be
associated
with the artsy-fartsy crowd. It's also why IBM
quickly grabbed the
market share and why there is much more less expensive
software
available for them. Follow the money...

This is where I found myself back then. My first
computer was a Vic Commodore 20. During that time I
took a detour and became the care giver for my older
family members and didn't have time for computers
until later in the 90's. I was kind of like Rip Van
Winkle waking up with an internet PC at his feet.
As Apple/Mac computers were early innovators of
programs which targeted creative production endevors
such as graphics design, image editing, animation,
music, audio/video, publishing, CAD, etc the public
preception of their users may have been formed back
then by those dynamics. PC'ers, conversly, may have
fallen more into the category of business office
users. Yet as more people gain enlightenment of the
Mac platform they will realize the Mac's can do
anything the PC's can...but that awareness will only
come in time. I only realized this in the last year or
two....in part because of this list.
I became a switcher so I could work in jobs where Mac
proficiency was required. I took it that many who
started with Apple or Mac had made it into supervision
where they could set policy that Mac's would be used
and that only Mac proficient users would be hired in
their shop.
