Personally, I'm not a fan of sniping. But it does work sometimes.

I usually place my max bid either a day or two before the close, or if it's a more important item, when the auction has between 5 and 10 minutes to go. Then I go watch TV. If I win, great. If I don't, oh well - I just saved $$$ and there will be another auction comin up.
