You missed the *most* important tip for ebay buying.
Never bid until the last five seconds of the auction. Any bid prior to that may only begin an emotional bidding war. Bid in the last five seconds and bid as much as you're willing to pay.
Personally, I'm not a fan of sniping. But it does work sometimes.
I usually place my max bid either a day or two before the close, or if it's a more important item, when the auction has between 5 and 10 minutes to go. Then I go watch TV. If I win, great. If I don't, oh well - I just saved $$$ and there will be another auction comin up.
