Here's a simple question.
To go wireless, do I need an Airport (not Extreme) card for my G4/450 Sawtooth
Correct only the original airport card fits the built in slot.

or can I get by with a non Apple brand (Belkin, Netgear) etc.?
Absolutely, any number of PCI slot wifi cards will work in your Mac. If you want the faster 802.11g than a PCI card is your best option.

Is there any advantage in picking Apple over the others?
Saves a PCI slot for other card. Your choices for an Original Airport card are limited to Apple's and Sony's. The Sony is the same card, with a different label. ( See the Accelerate your Mac web site FAQ's http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/action.lasso?-database=faq.fp3&- layout=FaqList&-response=answer.faq.lasso&-recordID=34221&-search for details.)

I can't believe how much people are asking & getting on eBay for the old (now discontinued) Airport cards.
It's the old supply and demand laws at work. If you have the space, a PCI card wifi adapter will be cheaper.
