My router (Asant FriendlyNet FR3004LC) stopped working yesterday and for two days in a row when I get to the office and wake up the G4/1.25, I get the following message:
"Force ShareWay IP Personal Bgnd to quit?"
ShareWay IP is a package that allows AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) to work over IP. It was bundled with OS 9 by Apple, as their cheapo solution to proving full File Sharing over IP in the classic OS.
Is ShareWay IP Personal Bgnd something I can just turn off in extensions manager? Don't I need it for file sharing with the other computers?
You only need it for IP-based file sharing. If you're using only normal native AppleTalk, just turn it off from the File Sharing cdev (uncheck the use IP option). No need to kill it with the exts manager.
FWIW, the only time I've seen ShareWay crash was when there was a corruption in one of the file sharing databases.
To reset those databases:
1. Boot with exts off.
2. Run Disk First Aid on each volume -- make sure the system is clean.
3. Use a tool like File Buddy to locate, make visible, then trash the "AppleShare PDS" files located in the root directory of each disk volume. You can do all of 'em, or guess which you think may be corrupted.
4. Reboot.
5. Turn AppleTalk and File Sharing on. The Sharing will take some time, because it has to rebuild those databases.
6. Manually re-apply all the folder ownership and sharing informations.
