The 8GB issue is TECHNICALLY not an issue when you use ANY controller card, it's a limitation with the onboard drive controller. However, the OS X installer has no way of detecting whether or not the card is attached to a controller card or the internal bus, so even if you are running from a controller card, it will make you install in the first 8GB, even though technically it would work.

On a Beige G3 you probably will see little difference between SATA/150 and ATA/133. ATA/100 you might see somewhat of a difference though.

Hi there!

I've got a Beige G3 MT with a 4GB SCSI drive, which I think is an Ultra/Wide drive, but it's running off of the internal SCSI bus. Anyways, I am running out of space, and need a new hard drive. Don't really want to go the SCSI route, mostly for cost and space limitations. So my question is, should I just go with an ATA/100 drive, or would SATA be a better choice? The prices seem to be just about the same, but would the Beige really be able to take advantage of SATA? Not to mention I'd have to buy a card, although that isn't too big of a deal, since I'd probably end up getting an ATA/133 card anyways if I went the IDE route. But yeah, is SATA worth it on a Beige? Also, is the 8GB partition for installing OSX still an issue with SATA? Well, any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a ATA/133 card. It makes any drives attached to it appear to be SCSI drives. The 8GB limit is a limitation ONLY of the Beige G3's IDE controller. So, a large ATA drive attached to the ATA/133 card looks like a big SCSI drive, and SCSI drives, by definition, have no limit to the size of the boot volume. This can bee seen by attaching a large SCSI drive to the on-board SCSI controller - you can use the drive as a single partition just fine, which is what i did for over a year on my Beige MT (rev B) before updating to ATA drives.
