To create a dual processor G4, Apple only had to redesign the daughter
board, making sure it "talked" to the motherboard following the
existing definition. This is much easier than the much larger task of
redesigning the motherboard to allow for 2 (or more) processors. Also,
it creates the option for us as users to upgrade our processor without
buying a new computer (or at least a new motherboard). So, I can
convert my single processor G4 to a faster or dual processor computer
by removing the existing daughter board, and replacing it with a more
sophisticated, but otherwise interchangeable daughter board.>

Well, only Mac examples would do for me since I only own Macs. But
anyway, even though SOME of the fog is lifting for me here (I get the
part about signals and voltage communications between motherboard and
daughter card, anyway), but I'm not quite sure on all of this. Namely, do
single processor G4s have their processor on the motherboard but just
have a different daughter board with other things on it, and do dual
processor G4s have one processor on the motherboard, the other on the
daughter board?

The processors are all on the daughter board. A single processor G4 has one processor on the daughter board, a dual processor G4 has a daughter board that has two G4 processors on it.
