Even if 3 MP is enough for the size of prints you want higher resolution can still be useful. One of the things I like about shooting digital is I can rotate and crop pictures to get a better print. Usually cropping is done at 80-90% of the original picture but sometimes I may only use a quarter of the shot.
I don't worry about picture size, storage capacity and processor speed keeps going up (went up a lot here recently).
