FWIW, I put a Belkin 5-port USB 2 card in my beige G3/300 MT, and it worked fine under 9.2.2 (at USB 1 speeds - as that's all 9.x.x supports) and it works at USB 2 under OSX (10.2.6 and 10.3.7). I also later added an Encore G4/700 ZIF & maxed it to 768MB. Nary a problem. Still works fine, 11 months after I fitted it.

PLUS if it is a USB 2.0 card, it won't work, has to be a 1.0 card. I have a
G3 minitower 266 mhz and no matter what I did I couldn't get any USB over
1.0 or 1.1 (whatever the designation is for the older USB) to work. I have
a Revision 2 ($77D.45F1) G3. Any old USB 1 card will work, doesn't have to
be Mac-specific. Yes upgrading to 9.2.2 is the way to go, too. I was stuck
on 8.6 for the longest time but 9.2.2 is much better.

So if you can get an older USB card you'd be good to go, that's what I
have and it works great. Slow, but great.

I believe USB 2 didn't work for you because USB 2 requires OSX
(can't remember if it needs 10.2 or greater?)
