That's odd...virtually every list I'm on frowns on top posting.
Here's a quick and simple explanation:

In the thread answering your question (or not, I never could really tell) we had the toxic mixture of both which is a gigantic pain to read.
Top posting works in a quick conversation between two people who know what they're discussing, and are familiar with what's been said before.
When there are several people involved, and since there is hardly anyone on the planet who knows how to cut the quoted material down to size, we end up with unreadable messages of five posters alternating top and bottom posts with all of the previous messages included.
OS X mail is very nice, you select the part of a message you wish to include in your reply and it's automatically included when you click on the reply icon, as above
When you post to the list, consider what the message will look like to someone who hasn't been following it yet.
