Q: Why is top posting frowned upon?

E-mail isn't a game of Jeopardy....

In the thread answering your question (or not, I never could really
tell) we had the toxic mixture of both which is a gigantic pain to read.

Top posting works in a quick conversation between two people who know
what they're discussing, and are familiar with what's been said before.

When there are several people involved, and since there is hardly
anyone on the planet who knows how to cut the quoted material down to
size, we end up with unreadable messages of five posters alternating
top and bottom posts with all of the previous messages included.

-That is indeed a big pain. Hope this is better!

OS X mail is very nice, you select the part of a message you wish to
include in your reply and it's automatically included when you click on
the reply icon, as above

When you post to the list, consider what the message will look like to
someone who hasn't been following it yet.

-This makes a lot of sense, Bruce, so thanks. For this list, I copy the
part I want to reply to, command-a on the body of the reply, and paste
in, then reply. Only three keystrokes but it works fine. Usually I do
email from my G4 iBook with Mail, but a) it is in for service and b)
this list - only this list - rejects messages from Mail on X saying it
uses a windows character set (!!!) so I use my 9500 with Netscape 4.8 to
reply here.

Only thing, copy and paste does not have the < marks to designate the
previous material. Thus I used the European quotation mark of -reply
just for this message.

The select and reply function of OSX-Mail is wonderful and has changed
my approach to editing email replies! I love it and it ought to be normal.

Lou
