Dear G-List:
I have a customer with an older Power Mac G3 running OS 9.1, a Lexmark C720 (which has an ethernet port), and a
D-Link DI-604 router. When the printer is directly connected to the computer, the printer works flawlessly. When the
printer is connected through the router, the computer cannot see the printer. What needs to be set either in the
router or within the OS itself so that the computer can recognise the printer while connected to the router?
The cable you are using to connect the printer directly to the computer is likely a crossover cable. This is okay. But to connect both of them to the router you need straight through cables for both. A straight through cable is a standard CAT-5 cable. A crossover cable is a specialized cable used for making unusual connections such as printer to computer or computer to computer.
To verify what you have hold the connectors at each end next to each other. The colored wires in each connector should be in identical positions for a straight through cable. A crossover cable will have the orange and green pairs swapped.
