I believe a .m3u is a mp3 playlist. Check www.winamp.com, I believe
the list it, they do play them. But Winders only AFAIK. They only
half hearted a Mac version a few years ago.

The browser probably recognizes the file type and is handling it
itself, instead of saving it for external processing. If that's what
is happening, you need to tell the browser that you want to save the
file. Have you tried right-clicking the link and selecting "save link
as ..." (or whatever text is appropriate for your browser)?
