I've never had a hard drive failure either, and my oldest machine has had the
same hard drive in it for eleven years. I am diligent in my backup routine,
though I'm sure that if I slacked off on this I would experience some sort of
catastrophe. Really important things, like financial records, etc., get backed
up daily onto a secondary hard drive as well as burned to CD. And once a
month, my sister gets a copy of this data as well for off-site storage. Other
stuff, like archived installation programs and video/music files get
transferred to tape for storage. I also clone the boot partition of my
primary hard drive once a month (just gotta love Carbon Copy Cloner!) With
shut-down scripts to take care of this stuff, it really requires very little
effort on my part.

I know these things can go south, but with adequate safekeeping of important
data, when they do the experience is not as traumatic. Play it safe and there
is no need to worry at all!

Ciao!
