Cross-over-cable to printer doesn't sound good to me.
What you need is a "straight" ethernet cable methinx.
The beige g3's are funny about switching appletalk
connections when they don't see something "live" on
their ethernet port. Mine always sneakily switch back
to printer or modem when I forget to switch my hub on
first. grrrrrrr!
