For the first time in a long time, I am using Mac OS 9.
I disagree. Yes, there are some things in X that I do appreciate, but the things that are missing...
Dock shmock - I want my Launcher back! I had all my applications neatly divided up - by category - into pages on the Launcher. Now I have to hunt through ALL my applications for the one I want on the Dock - which either takes up valuable screen space ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE or is hidden where I can't see it. And with it hidden, it's always popping up in the way every time I move the cursor near the bottom of the screen (having it at the sides is unacceptable for me).
I want my Application Switcher back. It sat neatly out of the way (but conveniently positioned) in the right corner of the menu bar. Now I have to search through all the applications in the Dock and figure out which of those little icons is the window I want.
I want WindowShade back. When I wanted to see the desktop I could just double click the title, find what I wanted, then double click the title again. Now I have to search through the Dock. WASTE OF TIME AND EFFORT! (Ok, I just checked out Expose - but I still prefer WindowShade.)
I want my stable STATIONARY Trash Can back. Used to be I could just throw things AT the trash and hit it 99.9% of the time. Now I have to pull up the dock and twiddle the mouse while the trash can dances around until I get what I'm trying to throw away EXACTLY on top of the trash. Otherwise I have to waste time removing things from the dock I meant to throw away, then go through the whole process again.
Where are the sound schemes? I had sounds schemes on OS9! There's hardly any audible feedback when I do stuff. I miss that! And (other than the error alert sound) I can't change what little audible feedback there is to suit my personal taste. When I'm in a bad mood I can't switch to the Carl Stalling sound scheme and hear silly cartoon feedback to cheer me up.
One of the things I loved about Mac OS was that it worked the way _I_ wanted it to. Now I'm stuck with someone else's idea of how a computer should work (shades of Bill Gates).
