Thanks to everyone for your comments on the Powerlogix upgrades. I'm barely above a stock-dumb "user", having sweated through the simple - in retrospect - installation of Firewire, USB and video (for an LCD screen) cards, replaced a dead hard drive and upping the memory of my Basement G3 (233, Rev. 1). For instance, I don't know what "cache" is or what it does.
Background: I'm a Marketing-Communications Consultant. I use my Mac for business, mostly Word Processing, although more and more Powerpoint, Excel and design (quark, photoshop, a little Illustrator), which is why I'm looking for an upgrade. I run 9.2.2 versus X mainly because I previously did not want to lay out the $ for all new software which I didn't seem to need. (Also, if it's not broke ...) My wife is starting a photography business and is using digital photography more, so I'm going to keep this Biege for her, or as a second/backup. I intend to add a G5 (or maybe a maxxed-out Mini) simply to begin migrating into X, its capabilities and software (go ahead, drag me kicking and screaming into the 2000s). Now I'm stepping into the proverbial can of worms. I am confused as to the difference between the following items for my Biege (I mention the manufacturer just for clarity, not because I want to know their reputation/quality/service, at least not yet): Powerlogix's G3/1GHz ZIF (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/PowerLogix/PFZGX10001G/) Fastmac's G4/450-533 or 500-600 ZIF (http://www.fastmac.com/products/processors/zifs.php) Is one route better than the other (staying G3 or going G4)? Can I, just by plugging in a ZIF, change my G3 to a G4 and why would I want to do that? Would that effect the software or OS I'm running now?? With the PL going for $230 from OWC amd the FM G4 500-600 going for 2 bills, it's pretty much a dead heat in $. I apologize for asking for what sound like the basics, but I can't seem to find verbiage that starts simple enough ... M. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
