Back in Finder, if I choose Go/Connect to Server..., then type in
afp://the.ip.address of the thinkpad (which is the way I originally
did it on the old thinkpad), it says "Connection Failed. The server
may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server
name or IP address and try again."

Does W2KPro also have a built-in firewall, if so turn it off. I had the
same problem lately when trying to connect a Mac to a PC w/ WinXP PRO.
After a while I noticed somehow the firewall had gotten turned on on
that PC. Turning it off made it connectable again.
Also you're sure the IPs are in the same range and subnetmask?

Same subnet, I gave them both manual ip addresses on the local network. I have a hardware firewall, so keep the software firewalls turned off, 2000 doesn't have one anyway, I think that was new to XP. I do run ZoneAlarm on the thinkpad, which is a kind of firewall I guess, but I use it to tell me when apps are trying to phone home, but I have the local network setup as 'trusted' in ZoneAlarm.
