Agreed. This may just be Apple posturing to get a better position with IBM over the chips.
But also, consider the problems Apple has had with IBM getting enough chips for the machines. And now with all the console machines that are moving away from Intel to the Power, Apple isn't as big of a customer as they were.
Of course, many a 'pundit' is expecting Steve to announce it Monday, per the article linked in the first message.
It would break a lot of software, but I'm not sure how hard it would be to switch. As long as the apps were written according to the spec for C+, carbon, coca, whatever, recompiling for x86 generally wouldn't be too hard (look at all the open source projects that will work on multiple platforms), and since Darwin already has been ported to x86...
Personally, I'd like to see Apple announce x86 chips for use in a new Newton. One with 802.11, bluetooth, and a GSM phone. :-)
