By "worrying," I take it you mean you have security concerns, but correct me if I'm wrong. I know that the thought of other people being able to "break into" their machine is what keeps some people offline. Or from being able to enjoy themselves when they are online. If security is a concern, why not throw together a stand-alone "junk box" solely for Internet access? That way, anything you care about stays entirely offline on your "main" machine. For instance, if money is particularly tight, you could pick up a Power Mac 9600 nowadays for $50 or so. The inveterate cheapskates on the PCI-Powermacs list (http://lowendmac.com/lists/pci-powermacs.shtml) can help school you on how to squeeze the most out of a PCI box for Internet use. There are people on that list who are still using their (admittedly upgraded) ten-year-old PM 7200s on the 'Net. Or you could go the "Deluxe" route and get a G3 B&W for around $100. I'm sure the G-List here could help you with deciding what hardware to pick out for a no-frills (yet still useful) machine. At any rate, you could put together an Internet-capable box for $150, tops. I understand your worries. It's just that Internet access is a lot like leaving the house: yes, we'd all like to stay where it's warm, safe, and predictable, but there are a lot of things that can't get done until you open the door and step into The Big Room. Even with all the pitfalls, I think you'll only realize 50% of your computing potential without at least one computer in your house/business hooked up to the 'Net.
