Shortly I will have a cd set of 10.3 to install for first time.
Know of a website / pdf etc. to direct me to as a guide to make the
transition relatively painless?
Are there things to do & watch out for specific to going direct
from 9.2.2
to 10.3?
I presume to look into firm ware.

What model Mac do you have?
Truthfully, just run the installer, then read Apple's help stuff for
someone coming from OS 9. that's a good start right there.
When you run the installer, click on the 'Customize' button after you
select the destination disk. This will let you deselect all the
foreign language stuff, as well as all the printer drivers for
printers you don't have.
That gets an OS X install down to about 2.5-3 Gb or so.
You'll want to install it on the larger IDE drive. What SCSI
controller do you have? there's a few old ones that work in 9 but not
in 10.
You have to anticipate upgrading your software as well, a few
programs, notably Office 2001 (though Office 98 is fine) and Quark
Xpress do NOT run under classic, and will require rebooting into OS 9.
Some older printers do not have OS X drivers, though workarounds
exist for some of them.
