It would be in the trash if it were even slightly marginal.
Well, I should probably qualify it a little more. The iMic operates
adequately most of the time, and I'm not entirely sure the mic itself
isn't the culprit, though it hasn't exhibited any problems elsewhere.
The last time I encountered a problem, which has been a couple of
months ago, the sound 'felt' like the iMic was doing something weird
with the Mac's clipping circuitry. The sound I recorded was a cordless
drill motor, which I ran down until I liked the sound, used it to
simulate a small electronic door opening in a simple animation
sequence. It took maybe a dozen or more takes because something was
causing unevenness, kind of ratchety, not smooth, as if the input level
was having a short spasm attack. The levels showed nothing that would
cause it, though, and it seemed OK at the last few takes.
I remember I unplugged the USB hub and tried it with the (then empty)
port on the Mac, but it didn't seem to have any effect. I might try it
again later, but I'll not likely be using anything but low-Z mics from
now on anyway.
All the best,
Ken N.
