We are donating an iMac 400 MHz to a woman in NJ who is bedridden. He

year old son keeps trashing her PC (!) and she relies on the computer
to
stay connected to the world. She pays for Comcast cable internet. I

know anything about cable modems, but I am assuming they could both
share
the internet connection if the cable modem is connected to a hub or
router,
just like our wireless modem at the shop, or like my DSL modem at home.
The kid is screaming because he believes if she has a Mac connected to
the
internet connection, his 7 MB download speed will tank. (this is when I
would rant about gamers, but I'll save that for the Mac2Mac list!).
Having no experience with cable modems, I don't know what to say. I was
planning on shipping a 100MB Asante hub with the iMac (thinking the
cable
modem would contain a router), but someone told me that might not be
the
case.
Besides flying to NJ and punching the kid in the nose for making this
much
more complicated than it needs to be, can some one who has
1. Cable ISP connection
2. A Mac and a PC in their house sharing the connection
email me and let me know how to set it up? Save this kid from a sudden
illness.

I think that it depends on the cable modem whether on not it has a
router. If Comcast in NJ is anything like Comcast in Ca. I can attest
to the fact that they are furnishing a dedicated IP address and only
one device is allowed on the connection. When I first got Comcast the
connection was a DCHP connection and as many PC's or Mac's that I had
on the ethernet hub would get an IP address. Then for some reason my
connection stop working and Comcast said that I needed a new Cable
interface box. So I went to their location and got my new "box" and
yeah! you got it, no longer could I get a DCHP connection.
So I purchased a Wireless router which also has 4 ethernet connections.
The router can be set to furnish DCHP connections, and once again all
of my PC's and Mac's can access the Comcast ISP.
Without degradation of service.
