Harry,
I told you I am a dumb newbie at having a drive fail. I really don't
know how DiskWarrior or Disk Utility knows, but I am taking their
word for it.
Here is what DiskWarrior's manual says.
Disk Warrior's hardware monitoring will only work on ATA drives with
built-in S.M.A.R.T. capabilities. DiskWarrior's hardware monitoring
capabilities uses internal diagnostic routines built into disk drives
by their manufacturers to detect and track how often a drive exceeds
its operating tolerances. The more frequently the drive exceeds
these tolerances, the more likely the drive is to experience hardware
malfunction, and the more at risk any data on that drive becomes.
Here is what Mac Help had to say:
Most disk drives include S.M.A.R.T hardware. S.M.A.R.T. stands for
Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology. Developed by IBM,
S.M.A.R.T. hardware allows hard disks to test themselves for
potential problems. You can check the health of your hard disk using
Disk Utility. If you've been having some problems with your computer,
it's a good idea to check the status of the hard disk. To learn more
about using Disk Utility, open Disk Utility, in the /Applications/
Utilities folder, and choose Help > Disk Utility Help.
In any case, I have copied everything over to the other drive. I
even got my iTunes collection off of the second partition. I have
booted from the new drive, and everything looks good. Except for
three aliased folders. I now have a folder (alias) labeled etc, temp
and var sitting on my drive. Am I safe in assuming I can trash can
these three?
I really didn't have anything critical on the failing drive. But I
have spent quite a few hours installing software and updates, copying
my saved email messages, and installing my itunes collection on that
drive. I don't know about the rest of you, but it takes me a long
time to set a computer up from scratch.
