I appreciate your suggestions and will bear them in mind. Food
for thought. I did at one stage (before putting Tiger on) erase
the whole HD. I have no trouble starting in 9 from the CD OS 9
install disk. At the moment, I do not get anywhere near trying
to start in 9 from the HD because there is no 9 OS on it. And
one of my problems is how to rectify this. When booting from the
CD the HD does a no show. I can't see it. AP can see it but says
it is not mounted. The OS 9 installer can't see it at all or is
not telling me that it can and is not interested in installing
on it nevertheless!

I am going to go upstairs when I have time (I keep the QS where
I cannot be distracted from my work on my trusty 7300) and see
what you are suggesting. I am not quite sure: will I start from
what? The original early X install and restore CD? The Tiger
DVD? I will try these in that order... Will the presence of the
drivers on the HD then be a trigger for the HD to show up, to
mount, to be recognised, when I then start up from the OS 9
install CD? I will be happily grateful if it does but why would
it? The drivers concerned surely need to be in the System folder
of the OS start up disk to enable it to see the HD? Or maybe it
is not like this? Maybe it looks at the HD quite well (without
letting me know) sees it and examines to see if *it* has drivers
on *it*.

Will let you know... and thanks for this, it has given me some
practical hope...

I was careful to stay with HFS+
