I finally got around to trying what proved to be very thorough directions from Epson on how to get around driver download problems and resetting one's printer systems settings.
I didn't bother with the driver download as I was going to try Gimp. I reset the printing settings as per instructions and the problem persisted. Then, in a flash of inspiration I disconnected the printer from my Keyboard USB port and reconnected direct to the MacMini USB port and ... hey ... printing. More testing to do, But, I'm not a heavy user so time will tell. Might help someone else. If anyone wants copy of Epsons instructions for file let me know off list.
