Part of my original post on this topic was...
I was recently asked by a Swaplister why I don't accept credit cards
via PayPal.
My response:
In order to accept credit card payments I would have to
"upgrade" to a Premier or Business account and pay fees on every
transaction. This would also require that I directly link a bank
account to PayPal; this policy puts the account holder at extreme risk
with no protection.
Whidh prompted David Elmo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> to say...
Just a mo! I have been paid by credit card via Paypal (the main
reason I use it!) and have not had to link it in any way to a
bank account.. so I don't think you have this right here, Gene.
Sure, when someone pays by credit card (not other ways) one has
to pay a small percentage but compared to setting up a credit
card facility via your bank or other means on the web, this is
truly small beer...
As I said, my experience dates from more than two years ago. It could
be that their policies have changed in the interim, or I may be a bit
fuzzy on some of the details. As I reflect on it more, it occurs to me
that I may have been forced to link my bank account to their service
for the PayPal debit card that I used for several months. I truly
don't remember which action - accepting credit cards or using the PP
debit card - led to me being forced to link to my bank account, but the
horrific results remain unchanged. I still stand firmly behind my
assertion that PAYPAL IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!
David, I'll investigate further the credit card vs. bank account issue;
thanks for the info. I'd be willing to start accepting credit card
payments if I know for sure that this wouldn't allow PayPal to get
their hooks into my bank account (see PAYPAL IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!). I
don't particularly care where the funds come from, as long as they do
come in...;^D
Because I'm addicted to the convenience of online shopping as well as
buying and selling on ebay (and don't have any credit cards), I still
maintain a PayPal account. I'm delighted by the rise of the bank debit
card (did you know that debit card payments now exceed credit card
payments?) and maintain a regular, bi-directional flow of funds between
my checking account and my PayPal account.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] adds...
[EMAIL PROTECTED] cited a bad experience as a buyer using Paypal tied
to his
bank account as a reason not to accept Paypal credit card payments.
But his
experience shows why a buyer should ALWAYS use a credit card.
Personally I
would be suspicious of a seller who does not accept Credit Card
Paypal. I would
expect the seller to pass the extra fee on to me, preferably in
advance,
calculated as part of the offering price. <snip> I would be afraid to
buy from someone online without the protection my credit card company
offers.
If I do resume accepting credit card payments via PayPal, you can bet
yer booty I'll pass the extra expense on to the buyer as part of "the
cost of doing business." But the fact remains that I'm *NOT* a
business...and the expectation (demand?) that a private party should
act like one and take credit cards seems presumptuous, to say the
least.
Also, John Collins <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wants to know...
You say, "You can do an Electronic Funds Transfer from a bank account
to your PayPal account."
Does this imply that you have a bank account listed with PP? If so what
do you recommend doing?
Yes, my checking account is listed as a Source of Funds option in my
PayPal account. If there's insufficient balance in my PP acount for an
intended purchase, I can choose to debit the rest of the cost from my
bank account. I *REALLY* like the fact that I must make a conscious
decision whether to spend those funds and click through an extra page
in the process; it gives me at least one more chance to reflect on
"want vs. need" before I click on that "Pay" button. I don't buy
anything for which I don't have the funds on hand, and I wouldn't want
a credit card even if I qualified for one.
I'm pleased by signs that this "fools phenomenon" of indebting oneself
to others for the sake of convenience, may soon go the way of the
dinosaurs.
This discussion has rapidly strayed WAY Off-Topic, so before the List
Nanny chastises me severely I'll say that this is my last post on the
subject(s). Anyone who wants to continue the thread can contact me
offlist; I will or will not respond privately.
