It does indeed sound like the disk is failing.

FWIW, it's a *lot* easier to recover data off the drive if you don't
have to boot off it. Is there any way you can get the drive out of the
Mini (not easy for the novice, I know), and put it in an external
enclosure?

If so, I would go that route, and let Apple replace the drive if the
computer is still under warranty.
