If you're going through a Mac-VGA adapter, the switch settings determine the resolution. if its a switchless one, you need software like Switchres to set the resolution <http://www.madrau.com/>

I had this problem with my Beige and ViewSonic going through an adapter, I didn't even realize there was a choice until I replaced it with a Mac 21 Multiscan and put the ViewSonic on my PC! The problem is definitely with the adapter being used, but it didn't bother me too much as I still had the standard Mac resolution available.
