I plugged in a different power supply (from a Power Computing machine) and got the same click and fan twitch, but also got flashing lights on the motherboard.
The Power Computing power supply does not have exactly the same output values as shown on the label for the G3 B&W. Notably, it does not have a rating for +5VSB, whatever that is.
