I now have a new IP address. Having found the DHCP Release and Renew tabs on my Linksys (on the "status" page, which I never go to instead of on the other advanced settings or"set-up" pages where I normally make changes)I gave it a whirl. Tried it with cable modem on. Always went back to same IP. Tried powering down modem and release/renew... reset. still came back the same. Then I got an idea.
I keep the wireless disabled until I need to use it. Started that up and made a wireless connection to the linksys router. Turned off the modem to reset. Unplugged the ethernet cable to my computer. Release/renew. Turned modem back on and initialized. Release/renew again. Voila, new IP address. Turned off wireless and went back to ethernet wired connection with the new IP. I'm guessing different MAC address for wireless card was the key to DHCP assigning a new IP.
