Thats basiclly what I got.. I was able to boot off od the install cd and always part way through a disk repair or format or install I would get strange errors like you got.. I fixed it with a pci controller.. I got one of those ones (the converted promise controllers ) the Jeff W. was selling on the list months ago.. and the problem went away.. I have since swapped out my mobo with the controller else I would offer it to you..

So, I set the CD to slave, booted off my Mac OS X install disk, and launched Disk Utility. When verifying the disk, it said keys out of order, repairing catalog file, the disk could not be verified, the underlying task has reported failure on exit. So, I try to erase the disk to reinstall the OS. Erasing fails because it says the disk can not be unmounted.
