Remember OS neXt came from Next, Inc. which never had type and
creator.
Apple's developer tools come with these command line tools:
GetFileInfo pathtofile
SetFile -t TEXT -c R*ch pathtofile
which will show type and creator and make the changes so that they
will stick even if a file is moved over onto a machine running
classic OS. The two tools will work OK even if other developer tools
are not installed. It's trivial to use them in a BBEdit worksheet but
they can also be persuaded to do things with a "do shell script" in
AppleScript. You can use file name globbing to get a batch effect.
Also don't use Always Open With on a single file. OS neXt will add 50
kB to each file while it adds icons to the resource fork.
