350? I /think/ it may be a Yikes even. *checks lowendmac* Yup, the Yikes came out in a 350 flavour. > She is considering buying a new imac g5, but in case she decides not > to, we are trying to see what options of upgrades there are for her. > I would like her to upgrade to Tiger OR at least Panther. > Questions are > > what would be a low end upgrade.... if you had to do one or 2 things > before you installed x what would you do? Memory. At least 512 megs. If it's a sawtooth, CPU upgrade. Sawtooth CPU modules are going fairly cheap now. > I would LIKE to just delete everything off the disk but she will > still need os9 to run an older version of quickbooks. IMO, she won't want to get a G5 then. The mirror door G4 was the last Mac that would boot into 9. Granted, 10 has classic emulator-kind-of-thing, but it may or may not run her program correctly. If having the ability to run 9 is a must-have, spend the money that would be used for the G5 and put it toward some upgrades. Let's see, going a bit crazy @ OWC... OWC Mercury Extreme G4/1.467-1.5GHz 2MB L3 Cache for PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics/Sawtooth - 349.00 (duals are available if you are /very/ serious about CPU upgrades, those are around 500) 512 megs PC100 that wil work in a sawtooth are about 80 each. And if she is happy with the current drive capacity and speed, great. Otherwise, I'd get a serial ATA adaptor and drive. ACARD AEC-6290M, the 2-Channel SATA Adapter - under 60 Pricewatch is showing 80 gig SATA drives going for about 50 (wish they were that cheap when I got mine) So, using this as an example and maxing out the memory: 320 for a full 2 gig of RAM 60 for the SATA card 50 for the drive 349 for the fastest CPU OWC offers under their own brand Total: 779, much less than a new G5. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
