A kernal panic can be induced either by hardware or software. It
cannot be directly caused by an application though (or shouldn't at
least). A kernal panic happens when the kernal software, the inner
core of the OS, does something it shouldn't. It is basically the
same as when a user application does something that causes it to
crash. In the case of the user app the kernal catches this and stops
the program. When the kernal does it the whole system is stopped
since there is no software there to watch the watcher, so to speak.
A common cause is poorly written Kernal Extensions (kexts) that are
drivers for hardware, especially ones that don't come with the OS.
