But, one question, where is the 'Trash' file kept. I want to try retrieving some things from the CCC copy of the 'old' disk.

That is an invisible folder called .Trash (note leading dot) at the root of your home folder. You can get there by using the Go to Folder command in finder.

O.K. seems easy enough! The target ".Trash" is located on another disk. So, in Finder 'Go to Folder' I used "/ScratchNBMT/Previous\ System\ 1/.Trash", and it tells me the folder can't be found. It is possible that .Trash is one of the folders that CCC deletes after the copy operation is finished. ;-(

Yes, it might well be. this is why you should NEVER consider the Trash as a safe storage place...

Next question, How can I get logged in as 'root'. The system thinks that there IS a 'root' account, but I can't seem to get at it!

Start a terminal session and do: sudo -s

You'll be asked for your login password, and then you'll have a root shell.

root can NOT log in, normally, though it can be enabled. I'd definitely advise against it, too much potential for truly fubar-ing your system exists. There's nothing you cannot do with sudo that you can as root. If you need to run a program 'as root' in the GUI for some obscure reason, I'd use something like Pseudo <http:// tinyurl.com/ca9n7>.
