It is possible that .Trash is one of the folders that CCC deletes after the copy operation is finished. ;-(

Yes, it might well be. this is why you should NEVER consider the Trash as a safe storage place...

I don't as a rule, just was hoping that I MIGHT be able to recover some otherwise 'long gone' files.

Next question, How can I get logged in as 'root'. The system thinks that there IS a 'root' account, but I can't seem to get at it!

Start a terminal session and do: sudo -s

You'll be asked for your login password, and then you'll have a root shell.

root can NOT log in, normally, though it can be enabled. I'd definitely advise against it, too much potential for truly fubar-ing your system exists. There's nothing you cannot do with sudo that you can as root. If you need to run a program 'as root' in the GUI for some obscure reason, I'd use something like Pseudo <http://tinyurl.com/ca9n7>.

I'm well aware of the FUBAR possibilities. But was looking for an EASY way to get past the 'You don't have permission', 'You don't own this' problems when trying to get rid of, primarily, foreign language files, (That I HAD told the installer NOT to install.) One way that seems to work most of the time when 'dragging to Trash' gets a 'can't do that' message of some sort, is a 'Right Click' on the file, and choose 'Move to trash' from the context menu.
