The main thing I was trying to find out with this thread is what routines the machines run at night, automatically, if the machine is left running. As a consequence of my inquiry, I was lead to Mac Janitor, which runs those same routines manually, if you will. The "Read Me" included with Mac Janitor is reasonably informative.
