Hi Rick, If you *did* like ProTools (who wouldn't!), perhaps you could consider an M-Powered version of ProTools LE, where the hardware you use would be one of several FireWire solutions made by M-Audio (now owned by Avid, as is DigiDesign) ; in this situation the ProTools software can be added for as little as $149, which is the educator's discount price. Your hardware cost dilemma is in the fact that you need four (or more) microphone ins (where if you needed only 2, just buying an MBox 2 would be sufficient). Sticking with a strictly DigiDesign solution forces you into a DIGI 002 solution for approx. $1,200 (with the PT software included) In your situation, you could possibly spend $300 on an M-Audio FireWire 410 (which gives you your first 2 channels of phantom-powered XLR Ins), plus an additional $90 for an M-Audio "Audio Buddy" 2-channel preamp or a better one by PreSonus or ART (giving you your second 2 channels of XLR power), plus $150 for the M-Powered ProTools, all for about $540. This solution would support 24-bit, 96k sampling, btw.
This is my first thought, just off the cuff. With more time, I can come up with several solutions, if necessary. BTW, I am in no way affiliated w/ DigiDesign or M-Audio. Hope this helps in some way.
