The best Sonnet upgrade for a Smurf is the 500 MHz G4. The 1 GHz from
Sonnet will step the bus speed down to 66 MHz, making it overall not
much quicker than the 500 running at full bus speed (100 MHz). If you
are patient you can get a used Sonnet G4 500 for a good price and max
out the RAM, all for less than $100.
You might want to consider a ATTO PCI express SCSI card and a 15K SCSI
drive. A fast hard drive really helps. As for video cards, if you do
have a G4 upgrade and 10.4.11 you can try to find or flash a GeForce
PCI 5200/256 MB. I have one Smurf set up this way, Core Image and
Quartz Extreme are hardware supported and it's a very useful Mac.
