This is a Quicksilver 2002 1GHz DP running 10.4.11, with 1.5 gigs of memory, three big internal HDs, all PCI slots filled, and lots of external firewire drives attached. It is also running two big external monitors. Been working perfectly in this configuration for a couple of years now, until today.
Normally I shut down my Mac every night, and start it up again the next morning. This morning, however, when I tried to start it, I got dark screens. I heard the startup bong, the fans were running, and the Mac sounded normal, but neither monitor lit up. After waiting a long time with nothing happening, I shut down the Mac by holding the start button until it turned off, then tried to start it again. Once again, it bonged and sounded normal, but the screens stayed dark. I didn't know what else to do, so I just kept shutting it down and restarting, hoping it would wake up. About the sixth try, as I was about to give up, the screens came to life with the OS-X startup theme picture, the progress bar filled up, and the desktop appeared. All normal from there. I used the Mac all day, and it worked fine, with no unusual behavior at all. Late in the afternoon a bad thunderstorm hit, with lots of lightning, so I shut down the Mac as a precaution. While it was down, I opened it up and popped in a new motherboard battery, figuring that may have been the problem. But later in the afternoon, when I tried to start it again, I got the bong and the dark screens again. And once again it took a half dozen forced shutdowns and restarts before the screens finally lit up and the Mac went through the startup routine leading to the desktop. And now that it's running again, it's acting completely normal again. But I'm afraid to shut it down now. So until I can make sure everything is backed up to the external hard drives, I'm just going to let this Mac run day and night, because there's no guarantee it'll start the next time. Anybody got any idea what could be wrong with this computer?
