Thanks Kris. There is no power button on this keyboard, but one of the
monitors, a Cinema Display, has a button on it that I think will start
up and shut down the Mac, so I'll try that next time. Or I'll push
once on the tower's button, then Return, to see if that works.

Well, I don't know how to read the stuff in the Console, it's all
greek to me. I looked at it, though, and the only suspicious thing (to
me) might be "-Computer diskarbitrationd[40]: SystemUIServer [224]:
55299 not responding." and farther down: "2008-09-08 22:33:21.221
Mail[314] 0x592deb0: observer lock is held, postponing release. break
at /SourceCache/Message/Message-753.1/Utilities.subproj/
FoundationAdditions.m:649 to debug"

I don't know what "postpoing release" means, but startup sure was
postponed when the screens stayed dark.

Both times, when the screens finally did light up, that's when the
startup process began:the apple symbol, OS-X icon, progress bar, and
finally the desktop. In other words, the operating system did not
start up while the screens were dark, and then light up to show me the
desktop. Apparently nothing was happening while the screens were dark,
system-wise.

My copy of Onyx says it won't work with 10.4, but I ran all the tasks
MacJanitor could do.

I'm still not going to shut this Mac down until I think it has some
chance of starting up normally again. So far I have no idea what else
I could do to give it a better chance to.
