I've never found it to be that much of a problem, Apple's pretty clear about what updates apply. Updates only update from the most recent version of the os to the new current one. If you're farther back than that, get the combo update. Security updates for a given year usually incorporate previous security updates for that year. If they do not, they'll tell you so. Another useful way of dealing with this is to run Software Update, note the packages it finds for your computer, then quitting SU. This is what I did in my dial-up days...even over dialup, simply finding out what packages you need is fast.
