I've used the download feature of "Software Update" many times. I set it to download only(no install) . You can then install just like a regular downloaded file and your file is of course still there when your done. Download and then install I've no idea. Seems like it should be but then Apple still hasn't updated info that "Packages" are no longer saved as they were in older MaxOS X versions.
