Apparently the G4 firmware update stopped allowing the use of CL2 RAM
that couldn't also run at CL3:

I recently had some mysterious crashes on a Pentium III PC where a
likely cause was having this kind of memory mixed with CL3 memory.

Here's a dissenting view, mainly noting that Apple did not give
detailed enough information about the firmware update:

Once I understood what was going on, I was lucky enough to be able
swap the two non-working 256 MB DIMMs I had in a Mac for the same size
DIMMs in a PC. By luck, the replacement DIMMS work in the Mac, so I
haven't lost the use of any memory. Now the PC (not the same one
mentioned above) is running only CL2 RAM, and it seems perfectly
stable. I think all the memory in the Mac is now 322, and thus all
CL3. (All of it is also PC100, not PC133.)
