What type of connection? Dial-up or high speed? What is a short time? 15 seconds, 2 minutes, 10 minutes? Are you actively doing anything with your connection (surfing, downloading, checking email) or is it just on and connected while you are doing non internet related stuff? OS version you are using? Specific settings for various things are in different locations based upon OS.
