I would suggest reading up on CCC 3.1.3 and see how it treats partitions and volumes. Then you can make an informed decision how partitions function in a backup scenario.
I have the sometimes laughed at PCI Graphics Yikes! partitions (80GB internal Seagate): OS X 10.4.11 Classic 9.2.2 APPS DOCS On my Quicksilver (internal 500GB Seagate): OS X Leopard 10.5.4 OS X Panther 10.3.9 Classic 9.2.2 APPS DOCS On an external FW drive in an OWC Elite with a 750GB HD, off the QS: Time Machine BU OS X 10.4.11 BU Classic 9.2.2 BU APPS BU DOCS BU I use this to do a CCC 3.1.3 backup over my home network from my Yikes! to the external FW off the QS. And I backup the QS using Time Machine to the FW drive (not backing up the other partitions on the FW Drive (the BU partitions of my Yikes!)). Determining the sizes depends on what you are storing ... lots of APPS? DOCS? I usually leave more than ample space for the OSs ... except Classic 9.2.2 which won't grow much past what Spotlight might do to it. Good luck.
