The short version: Happy ending. Thanks to all of you.

The long version:

Bill's mouse-button trick indeed did eject the CD. (A good night's
sleep indeed did help, but his reassuring message helped me sleep
better, too.)

I knew about the physical button on the disk drive, having
transplanted this drive into the machine my ownself, but I wasn't up
for the physical disassembly involved now (or eager to klutzily drill
through the button from the front).

Then, it took Charles' suggestion of the four-fingered Vulcan/Twister
salute to liberate the startup disk. That worked, too.

At this point, I succumbed to puzzlement about the firmware's
unwillingness to be re-burned. I called OWC Tech Support, where kindly
Dewayne told me the processor button can take up to 10-20 attempts
before it'll work. I guess it just physically gets old, dirty and
tired. He was right. Once it finally worked (marked by a rapid pulsing
of the power-button light), the firmware on-screen message indicated a
newfound willingness to be re-flashed. The rest was history.

The result (1.6 GHz single, 7447a) is as fast as advertised. The two
small onboard fans are just a bit noisy, but the sound quality is not
disagreeable, and the way OWC configured the heatsink and the fans
would seem to create an airflow path so specific as to foil my Plan B
of plopping one really large fan in their place.

Success! Again, thank you all. You are a remarkable resource.
