Several, apparently three, user group members resolved the problem
with a fix from:
http://www.macfixitforums.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/460639

The problem apparently comes from a conflict between a recent update
to QuickTime 7.6 and an older version of Stuffit 10.0.2, where the
Stuffit AVR preference needs to be turned off.
