Use AppleJack to clear the kernel caches and rebuild them. Get rid of auto-login. Having things STOP and display that login screen tells you if it got that far properly. Then you can see how things go from there. Loading sometimes... Does it seem to load more often on a warm restart or a cold boot (from power off).
